The synthesis of some indol derivatives by the well-known Fischer synthesis is described. The phenyl ether of tryptophol deserves separate mention because of its close relation to tryptophane. In all cases the now much exploited reaction of Japp and Klingemann has been utilized to prepare the requisite phenylhydrazones.
