Abstract
During the past decade, the proportion of American women giving birth over the age of 35 has increased. In 1991, there were approximately 513,000 pregnancies in women 35 to 39 years of age and another 92,000 in women 40 or older,1 as older and often well-educated women made up for previous delays in childbearing. This trend has continued to intensify among women over the age of 30.
