Position sensitive detection with laser induced fluorescence

Abstract
Two dimensional density maps reflecting the spatial distribution of individual quantum states of molecules such as OH, O2 and NO have been obtained at atmospheric pressure. The experimental technique used in these studies takes advantage of the high spectral brightness of tunable, narrowband excimer lasers to obtain easily detectable fluorescence from short‐lived or predissociating states of these molecules. Gated image intensifiers coupled with CCD cameras and appropriate imaging electronics hardware capture and store the fluorescence for further analysis. Because of the short pulse length of the excimer laser of about 10 ns temperature and density profiles of turbulent systems can be obtained.
