Non-Coherent Scattering--V: Thermalization Distances and their Distribution Function

Abstract
The distribution function for thermalization distances is derived for an infinite atmosphere with a plane source. Precise definitions of the thermalization length are discussed from the point of view of representing the distribution by a single characteristic length; of these a definition in terms of the median of the distribution seems to be most useful. The distribution of longest flights is derived and shown to provide a good approximation to the distribution of thermalization lengths at large distances from the source. Extensive numerical illustrations are provided.
