SYNOPSIS Estuarine muds in suspension have been shown to exist as flocs, consisting of groups of solidparticleswithoccluded water. From an analysis of the variation of sedimentation velocity with solids concentration, the average floc density and diameter were estimated. The materials could be deflocculated by reducing the salinity of the suspension medium. The muds, when permitted to settle, compacted under their own weights to different extents...Keywords
