Abstract
A rank-order test is proposed for experimental situations where it is of concern to determine whether a sequence of multinomial probabilities may be varying significantly in independent trials each with a fixed number of possible outcomes. An approximate X2 - test for the hypothesis H0 of constancy of probabilities is proposed, and the generating function obtained for the distribution of the rank sums. An example using sibship data on congenital malformations (data of Milham) illustrates the use of the test for birth-order effect when several abnormalities are present.
