Mobility and Annual Range of Wild Turkeys in Missouri

Abstract
Mobility and annual range information on the eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallapavo silvestris) was provided by 66 birds over a 17-mo. period. Turkeys were trapped by cannon net, banded, and released at the trapsite. Patagial wing-tags made visual identification of each bird possible. Ten birds were equipped with transmitters and provided telemetry data on daily movements. Minimum annual range of 4 adult males observed throughout the study averaged 750 acres. Telemetry data on 4 other adult gobblers showed that their average annual range was 1100 acres. Annual range of hens appeared to be slightly larger than 1300 acres, based on observation only. Dispersal from winter range for adult gobblers was 1.3 miles; for hens 1.9. Limited data indicated that juvenile hens were perhaps the most most mobile age and sex group and that several of them moved off of the study area during the spring dispersal.
