Expandable Silicone Implants for Scleral Buckling

Abstract
Expandable implants made of silicone rubber were tested for scleral buckling in ten owl monkey and 30 rabbit eyes. Implants placed under scleral trapdoor flaps and explants sutured to the sclera were expanded with physiological saline solution to obtain the required buckling. The size of this buckling could easily be modified during or after the operation. Two types of expandable implants of different thicknesses are described. The possible use of expandable implants in retinal detachment surgery is discussed.
