Magnetic Fields in Stellar Bodies: I. Magnetic Fields in Polytropfs

Abstract
Using a first order perturbation technique the form of the equilibrium poloidal magnetic field for polytropes is calculated. A special case where the internal field is continuous with an external dipole field is worked out in detail for a wide variety of polytropic indices. The numerical calculations show that the form of the field is relatively insensitive to the polytropic index so that the field calculated for the polytrope is a reasonable approximation to that in a real star. This result is only valid when the magnetic field is a weak perturbation.
