Cerebrovascular and Brain Morphologic Correlates of Mild Cognitive Impairment in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Twin Study

Abstract
SEVERAL longitudinal studies show an association between middle-age elevations in blood pressure (BP) and impaired later-life cognition.1-5 The mechanisms underlying these long-term associations are unclear, but several processes, including disturbed cerebral perfusion or reduced metabolism,6-8 abnormalities of cerebral white matter,9 and cerebral atrophy,10 have been implicated.
