Cross Sections of a Two-Layer Inertial Gulf Stream

Abstract
A two-moving-layer model for cross sections of the inertial flow in the Gulf Stream is studied. Potential vorticity is assumed uniform within each layer. With one or two layers outcropping, the model produces fronts and the anticyclonic and cyclonic shear zone of the Gulf Stream. A three-moving-layer model successfully reproduced the main features of a cross section of the Gulf Stream observed at 68°W.
