STUDIES ON MYOCARDIAL METABOLISM. V. THE EFFECTS OF LANATOSIDE-C ON THE METABOLISM OF THE HUMAN HEART 1

Abstract
The effect of intravenous injection of lanatoside-C on myocardial metabolism was studied in a series of 12 patients, using the technique of coronary sinus intubation. The results indicate no major changes in the myocardial extraction and utilization of glucose, pyruvate, lactate, ammo acids, fatty acids, and ketone bodies. These findings suggest that the improvement in work capacity of the failing heart induced by cardiac glycosides must be the result of the action of energy liberation, or more specifically, on the contractile proteins of failing heart muscle directly.
