Abstract
In the process of collecting a library of spectra of aromatic compounds for investigation of synthetic liquid fuels, various correlations have been observed. (1) Phenylnaphthalene-type spectra have been noted in related compounds, (2) spectra and structures of fluorene derivatives have been studied; (3) graphs of intensity as a function of wavelength for the first band in the spectra of several alkyl- and alicyclic-benzenes and phenols have revealed interesting properties; (4) spectral effect of three classes of alicyclic rings on the first band in spectra of polynuclear condensed aromatics have been discussed, and (5) ring-strain, produced by substituents in an aromatic nucleus because of steric hindrance, has been found to cause drastic changes in the spectra. Keywords
