Abstract
A method is described for measuring gaseous metabolism of cells, tissues, or whole organisms. The apparatus consists of an exptl. chamber with or without provision for gas circulation according to the exptl. requirements. The gas phase is continuously sampled by a recording mass spectrometer. This instrument is provided with automatic tuning and records in sequence the partial pressures of several gases in the chamber at frequent intervals. Practically continuous monitoring of a predetermined number of gases is achieved. The method has excellent analytical specificity. Isotopic concns. also are measured so that the method is suitable for studies with tracers. Sample data are presented illustrating appln. of the method in a biological expt. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
