Abstract
To the Editor: To interpret human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Western blots, the specific nature of each band must be understood. Bands near the top of each strip, for example, were thought to reflect the reactivity of antibodies with the HIV gpl60 envelope precursor and the gpl20 envelope glycoprotein. However, we have unexpectedly found that viral antigens, migrating with mobilities of 160 and 120 kd on commercial Western blot strips, are primarily multimers of the HIV transmembrane glycoprotein gp41 that react with antibodies to gp41. Confusion over the identification of these bands has resulted in incorrect conclusions in experimental studies. Similarly, . . .Keywords
