Abstract
The chem. comp. of muscle in progressive muscular dystrophy was altered more extensively than in diseases with secondary atrophy of the muscles. Changes comparable to those found in progressive muscular dystrophy were observed in diffuse myositis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In progressive muscular dystrophy, concns. of creatine and other substances extractible by dilute acid were diminished. Phosphocreatine and adenosine triphos-phate constituted a smaller proportion and soluble ester P and inorganic P a larger proportion of the total acid soluble P compared with control specimens of muscle normal in appearance. Chem. analysis of muscle can be used to supplement clinical and histological exam. in diagnosis and in measurement of deterioration of muscle. Following glycine therapy, somewhat higher concns. of muscle extractives were found. Creatine had no effect.
