Cu_2(1,4-diazacycloheptane)_2Cl_4 is not a Spin Ladder

Abstract
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported for the strongly dimerized quantum antiferromagnetic material Cu_2(1,4-diazacycloheptane)_2Cl_4 (CuHpCl). Experiments were carried out on both a deuterated powder and hydrogenated single crystals. The results confirm the existence of a band of magnetic excitations in this system in the energy range 0.8 <= hbar w <= 1.4 meV previously observed for hydrogenated powder samples. The wavevector dependence of the scattering intensity is inconsistent with the currently accepted spin-ladder model of the antiferromagnetic interactions in this system. At T=1.6 K, the excitation spectrum contains two modes. These modes show dispersion both parallel and perpendicular to the putative ladder direction in the crystalline a-c plane. Analysis based on the first moment sum rule indicates that the dimer bond is different than previously supposed, and that geometrical frustration is important in this system.
