Isolation and Cytopathogenic Effect of Influenza B Viruses in Monkey Kidney Cultures.

Abstract
Influenza B viruses obtained in 1954-55 were isolated in monkey kidney cultures with greater facility than in the chick embryo. In the latter host only were 2d passages sometimes necessary, and additional strains were isolated in monkey kidney cultures as well. All strains uniformly produced cytopathogenic effects in cultures of monkey kidney and the degree was proportional to the hemagglutination titer. Infectivity titers determined in monkey kidney with original specimens on passages were uniformly higher than those determined in the chick embryo indicating that in the order of 100 times as many viral particles were required to infect the latter.
