Abstract
Since Hertz and Roberts,1 and Hamilton and Lawrence2 reported in 1942 on the first patients with thyrotoxicosis treated with radioactive iodine, successful remissions have been obtained in a large number of patients with hyperthyroidism using this isotope. The results of treatment have established a definite place for radioactive iodine (I131) in the treatment of selected cases. At present over 130 hospitals and clinics3 are using I131 for such cases. During the past five years we have had an opportunity to institute therapy in approximately 500 cases of primary or secondary hyperthyroidism. The purpose of this paper is to report our experiences in the management of 384 patients who have been followed for a period of from 6 months to approximately 60 months and whose therapy has been completed.
