Abstract
The use of informal (children, friends) and formal support networks and factors associated with their use were examined in order to identify patterns of network involvement for a sample of 245 older rural adults whose incomes fell below the poverty threshold and a comparative group of 235 older rural adults with higher incomes. For each group, three patterns of network use were identified through canonical correlation analyses. Formal service use among the poor group was limited to situations of extreme need. Implications of the heavy reliance upon family are discussed. Keywords
