Abstract
The respiration of brain tissue from normal, rice-fed and polyneuritic pigeons was studied in presence of lactate buffered with either phosphate or bicarbonate. The R. Q. of the tissue from polyneuritic pigeons was about 0.68 and was raised nearly to the normal value (0.9) by the in vitro addition of minute amounts of crystalline vitamin B1 (2[gamma]/3.0 cc.). The low value is independent of inanition since the addition of vitamin did not affect the R. Q. of tissue from normal pigeons, and hardly influenced that of tissue from birds fed on polished rice but not showing symptoms. This publication has 14 references indexed in Scilit:
