Multiple Myeloma in Naproxen-Induced Acute Renal Failure

Abstract
To the Editor: It is well known that nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents can cause acute renal failure in patients with underlying risk factors.1 We have seen two patients with unrecognized multiple myeloma who presented with severe acute renal failure after taking the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent naproxen.The first patient was a 76-year-old woman who took 500 mg of naproxen twice a day for low-back pain. One week later she was admitted to a hospital with a serum creatinine level of 11.3 mg per deciliter, blood urea nitrogen of 150 mg per deciliter, and potassium of 9.6 mmol per liter.
