Abstract
Schiller R. K. (1981) A model of retail branch distribution, Reg. Studies 15, 15–22. Multiple retailers might be expected to locate branches in centres with the maximum sales potential. On this assumption a model is suggested which produces an expected distribution of branches between different levels of the retail hierarchy for various numbers of branches. The model shows the different pattern between a static and an expanding branch network. Evidence from the expansion of building society branches and a specialist multiple retailer is used to test the model. It is felt that the model might have strategic use as a guide to the underlying trends in branch distribution. Keywords
