Abstract
Thiothixene (Navane), one of the thioxanthene group of antipsychotic drugs, is reported as effective in schizophrenia. Withdrawal symptoms have not been described with members of this group of neuroleptic drugs.A 46-year-old man with a chronic schizoaffective psychosis was treated with thiothixene, 30 mg daily for 57 days. After abrupt withdrawal of the drug he developed a severe acute brain syndrome lasting for 7 days. This was not controlled with a phenothiazine but was rather quickly brought under control with reinstitution of the thiothixene. No evidence of permanent damage was found. Keywords
