SLAD: A Neutron Diffractometer for the Study of Disordered Materials

Abstract
The Studsvik Liquids and Amorphous materials Diffractometer (SLAD) is a neutron diffractometer designed for measurements of the structure factor of liquids, glasses and amorphous materials, for total (i.e. Bragg and diffuse) scattering measurements from powder crystalline samples and for medium resolution, high count rate, powder diffraction. In this paper we describe in some detail the design of the instrument and the software available for data analysis, with emphasis on the interplay between ‘hardware’ design choices and software development in optimising the scientific performance of the instrument (for a given budget and neutron source).
