The Indirect Measurement of Arterial Blood Pressure in the Horse

Abstract
SUMMARY An accurate modified auscultatory technique for the indirect measurement of arterial pressure in the horse is described. Limitations of the method were sensitivity to external motion in nervous, conscious horses, and the failure to detect Korotkoff sounds in shocked, anaesthetized surgical cases. The apparatus required for the method is expensive and is probably impractical for routine monitoring during anaesthesia. RÉSUMÉ Une technique d'auscultation pour mesurer la pression artérielle chez le cheval est décrite. Les limites de la méthode apparaissent avec la nervosité chez le cheval conscient et avec l'impossibilité de déceler les bruits de Korotkoff chez les chevaux anesthésiés en état de shock. L'èquipement exigé est couteux et ne parait pas utilisable pour le controle de routine pendant l'anesthésie. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Es wird eine genaue, auskultatorische Methode für die indirekte arterielle Druckmessung beim Pferd beschrieben. Die Leistungsgrenzen der Methode bestand in ihrer Empfindlichkeit auf Bewegung bei nervösen Pferden und in ihrer Unfàhigkeit Korotkoff-Geràusche bei narkotisierten, geschockten Fällen nachzuweisen. Die Apparatur ist teuer und wohl für die Routine-Druck-überwachung während Narkosen aus praktischen Grün-den schlecht brauchbar.
