Abstract
A rate equation model for a pulsed optically pumped laser is presented and compared to experimental results for the carbonyl sulphide 19 mu m laser. The effects of v-v relaxation, 'hot-band' absorption and power broadening are described, and quasi steady-state behaviour, line tunability and the efficiency of the laser are discussed. Keywords
