The stability of sunspots

Abstract
An axisymmetric flux tube with a magnetic field in pressure equilibrium with an external, stratified plasma is stable if the radial component of the field decreases upwards at the interface. In the Sun, sunspots and pores with fluxes greater than about 1019 mx are stable over the range where a vacuum field model is adequate. At greater depths an additional stabilizing mechanism is required.
