Abstract
Suspended tissue culture cells incorporate 32P within 60 -90 min. into two high molecular weight RNA fractions which can be separated by chromatography on methylated serum albumin celite columns. One fraction contains mainly ribosomal precursor RNA. the other ribosomal precursor RNA and cell messenger RNA. Under unfavorable growth conditions which do not allow cells to multiply the synthesis of ribosomal precursor RNA is inhibited and high molecular weight RNA accumulates which resembles cellular DNA in nucleotide composition. The experimental results indicate that the synthesis of ribosomal precursor RNA and of messenger RNA in mammalian cells are independently regulated. Keywords
