Carcinoma of the Ovary–Report of 106 Cases

Abstract
In 106 patients reported here 85 were thought to be of Miillerian origin. Serous tumors were more malignant than mucinous tumors, while solid carcinomas were most lethal of all. Extent of disease in each group was the most important factor in survival. There were 8 granulosal cell carcinomas; 4 are alive. Two represented germ cell carcinomas. One with chorionepithelioma had an early death, but the patient with teratomas has lived five years. Eleven metastatic carcinomas without exception were not cured. The present approacn to treatment of carcinoma of the ovary continues to be early diagnosis, which is most difficult, and intensive treatment of Stage I, II and III patients with complete operation. Irradiation therapy is particularly indicated in Stage HI. In this group of 106, 54 were treated more than five years ago. Twenty-two (40.7%) survived five years, but two subsequently died of carcinoma, and a third developed metastasis in a cervical lymph node in the seventh year.
