Abstract
The hydraulics of naturally gravel-paved channels are examined on the basis of field and laboratory data covering a discharge range from 1 cfs to 100,000 cfs and a bed-material-size range from 0.5 in. to 18 in. Natural gravel pavements appear to be closely associated with conditions of low bed-load transport. An equation relating tractive force to bed material size, an exponential flow formula, and a regime-type width-discharge relationship are combined to form a set of channel design rules. Some possible applications are stated. Methods for sampling gravel pavements are also mentioned briefly.
