Abstract
In his article Employment of Diabetics John Lister (1982) concluded that most diabetics are able to follow any occupation and that the majority of diabetics are reliable employees with good attendance records. This study summarizes the work experience of a group of 50 diabetic employees who were identified in one Region of the Post Office. Their sickness absence records for a 5-year period were compared with a matched, randomly selected control group and with regional and national postal sickness absence figures for the 4 years for which these are available. In one of the study years, the diabetic group experienced fewer days absence per person per year than the national figures. Over the whole study period the diabetic group experienced a greater number of spells and days of absence than the control group. This paper is the first of a series of three. The second paper describes the use of a questionnaire to obtain further information on the range of duties being performed by diabetic employees and gives some indications of the employment problems facing this group. The final paper describes an investigation into medical retirement and a mortality study of diabetic employees over the period 1975–1984.Keywords
