Abstract
In a purple white stock of Drosophila melanogaster (eyes white) individuals appeared in which 1 or more facets in 1 or both eyes were red. When these were isolated and cultures made a percentage of the offspring showed pigmented facets in the white eyes. In 21 cultures from 3 generations the number of flies showing pigmented facets varied from 17 to 53%. The occurrence of pigmented facets in 4 generations of flies indicated that the character was hereditary, even though the results do not give Mendelian ratios.
