The Helminth Parasites of Birds. I. A Review of the Trematode Genus Tanaisia Skrjabin, 1924

Abstract
Flukes of the genus have been taken from 28 specimens of birds belonging to 3 orders and 8 families. Four spp. are recognized: T. fedtschenkoi Skrjabin (type) (= T. elliptica Nezlobinsky, T. pelidhae Chaetum, Ohridia panuri Nezlobinsky, Proshystera rossittensis Korkhaus); T. zarudnyi (Tamerlania z. Skrjabin = T. meruli Nezlobinsky, T. japonica Yamaguti, T. melospizae Penner, T. gallica Dollfus); T. atra (Lepidopteria a. Nezlobinsky = L. plegadis Nezlobinsky and L. graciosa Nezlobinsky); and T. bragai (Tamerlania b. Santos). Tamerlania Skrjabin, Lepidopteria Nezlobinsky, Ohridia Nezlobinsky and Proshystera Korkhaus are all considered as synonyms of Tanaisia. All 4 of the recognized spp. (with variations) are represented in the present collection: these are redescr. and figured. The distr. of the spp. among the families and orders of birds throughout the world is tabulated and the general morph. and taxonomy of the group is discussed. Affiliations of the group with members of the genus Eucotyle Cohn are not evident, and hence the writers cannot recognize the logic of including these forms in the family Eucotylidae.
