Absorption of Choline From Intestinal Loops in Dogs

Abstract
In dogs, choline was absorbed well from acute or chronic ileal loops. This was indicated by absorption rates over 1-3-hour periods and, at higher dosage levels, by toxic effects resembling strong cholinergic stimulation. The chronic loops showed the more rapid choline absorption. In vitro incubation of choline within excised intestinal loops for 1-4 hours resulted in losses of choline and gains of trimethylamine which were both small and unrelated to time after 1 hour.
