Abstract
An examination is made of the static orientation solutions for a nematic liquid crystal in a pipe, including those involving phase changes near the center of the pipe. It is found that solutions both with and without phase change are possible if the pipe radius is sufficiently large, but that below a critical value of the pipe radius all solutions involve phase change. Keywords
