Abstract
A Stark cell to study the normally inactive infrared spectrum of homonuclear diatomic molecules has been built. This cell utilizes parallel metal plates to apply high electric fields across the sample gas. Fields of 240 000 V/cm in H2 and 350 000 V/cm in N2 have been achieved at 400 psi using the new cell. The electric‐field‐induced pure rotation infrared spectra of H2 was observed. The frequencies of the S0(2), and S0(3) pure rotation lines were measured, and the molecular constants B0, D0, and H2 were calculated from these data. Keywords
