Abstract
The National Library of Medicine's computer system has developed from a second generation computer to the large IBM multiprocessor system that is now used to maintain the MEDLINE file, provide retrieval services, and produce the computer photocomposed products of the NLM. On-line maintenance facilities have been developed for the final steps in the input and file maintenance processes. The retrieval program, ELHILL, and its supporting programs now provide more bibliographic searches than any other system in the world. The photo-composed products, including Index Medicus, are produced through the use of flexible publication programmes which have allowed NIH to use several different photocomposers. Le système informatique de la National Library of Medicine (NLM) émit au départ un ordinateur de la deuxième génération. Aujourd'hui, c'est un grand système IBM multiprocesseur qui gére les fichiers, procéde aux recherches et à la photocomposition des documents édités par la NLM. Des facilités de maintenance en temps réel ont été développées pour l'entrée des informations et la mice a jour des fichiers. Le programme de recherche ELHILL et les programmes annexes produisent aujourd'hui plus de bibliographies que n'importe quel autre système dans le monde. Les documents photocomposés, l'Index Medicus notamment, sont édités graˇce à des programmes de publication très souples qui ont permis, d'autre part, au NIH d'utiliser différents photocomposeurs.
