Abstract
In lampbrush chromosomes of R. cyanophlyctis, studied by phase-contrast microscopy, the loops are large and the chromomeres so small they are barely visible. In post-lampbrush stage chromosomes, there are no lateral loops and the chromomeres are reduced in number and larger. The chromonema is always single, but its double nature is suggested by the observation of two lateral chromomeres at several positions throughout its length. Loop bridges are shown to be artifacts. The nucleoli appear to arise mostly from the medium size chromosomes. The chromomeres react positively to DNA tests, but this is not true of the loops and chromonemata. The loops are the only portion of the chromosome containing RNA.This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
