A Comparison of Three Methods for Naturally Reproducing Oak in Southern Michigan

Abstract
Reproduction that had become established 14 years after clearcutting, shelterwood, and group selection cuttings in a mature mixed hardwood stand, composed primarily of oak, was examined. Substantial reproduction of red oaks was found only in the clearcut and shelterwood treatments, but most of it was being overtopped by black cherry, elm, sugar maple, and red maple. White oak reproduction was virtually nonexistent, even though this species was a major component of the original stand. These results indicate that oak reproduction can be obtained on good sites using shelterwood or clearcut systems, but subsequent competition control is necessary to keep it in the dominant class.
