Abstract
Estimates of toroidal current driven by helicon waves are presented. It is shown that a net current may be driven even if no wave momentum is dissipated. Furthermore, because the magnetostatic field has a poloidal component, ponderomotive forces that act in the poloidal direction may also drive toroidal current. Toroidal current driven by poloidal ponderomotive forces arises even with toroidally symmetric wave launching, when the current driven by the toroidal momentum dissipation is cancelled. Keywords
