Mann-Williamson Ulcer: Analysis of Digestion and Absorption

Abstract
The significance of nutrition in the development of ulcers was investigated in (a) ordinary Mann-Williamson dogs and (b) in Mann-Williamson dogs having an external cannula to the antrum. Both series of dogs were fed orally but group (b) also received food by the cannula. Gelatin, glycine, glucose and coconut were fed. Protein digestion was deficient in Mann-Williamson dogs. Fat and sugar absorption were normal. Fat was absorbed as chylomicrons, although bile and pancreatic secretions were absent from the upper bowel. Probably the decreased protein digestion andthe decreased absorbing surface are significant in the etiology of the Mann-Williamson ulcer.
