Abstract
Results of extensive biaxial testing of two new grades of beryllium and two titanium alloys, 6Al-4V and 6Al-6V-2Sn, are presented. The tests are conducted on thin-walled tubular specimens subject to combinations of axial load, torsion and internal pressure. The results include description of the yield, plastic flow and failure properties of these alloys under plane stress conditions. In each case, yield and plastic flow is adequately described by a Mises yield criterion and associated flow rule. Tensile failure is more accurately described by a maximum stress criterion, particularly for the beryllium which has low ductility. Biaxial ductility is shown to be very sensitive to both the form of the failure stress criterion and to the strain hardening modulus of the material. The effect of prestraining on subsequent ductility in beryllium is examined. Keywords
