Optical Properties of an Isolated Resonance with Natural or Collision Broadening

Abstract
A classical model which includes the Clausius—Mossotti approximation for the local electric field acting on a molecule in a dielectric medium is used to calculate a generalized absorption coefficient, index of refraction, and normal incidence reflectivity for an isolated resonance. We assume a natural or collision broadened resonance; Doppler broadening is neglected. The inclusion of the local field gives frequency shifts and spectral distribution changes in the optical constants which depend on the strength of the resonance and residual index of refraction. Calculations of the optical constants are reported for a number of different line strengths and values of the residual index of refraction. Approximation formulas are given for certain characteristics of the optical properties.Keywords
