Abstract
Characters of the ascus and ascocarp centrum are emphasized in separations of the orders and families and an attempt is made to avoid the less fundamental characters such as those of the stroma or ascocarp as color, shape, or position relative to the substrate. The important features involve the Sphaeriales and Hypocreales, having asci with an apical pore, and the Dothideales, Pseudosphaeriales Microthyriales, Lo-phiostomatales and Hysteriales, having asci in which the spores are ejected by the outer wall splitting and the inner protruding. Five families are placed in the order Sphaeriales[long dash]Clavicipitaceae, Xylariaceae, Allantosphaeriaceae, Diaporthaceae, and Phyllachor-aceae. The Discomycetes are divided into the Ostropales, the Helotiales in the Inoperculates, and the Pezizales and the Tuberales in the Operculates. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
