Abstract
In pot experiments, with barley seedlings as an indicator crop, it was found that sulfomethylated and sulfonated coal products were less effective nitrogen fertilizers than ammonium nitrate for a Solonetz soil. Sulfonated coal suppressed the uptake of sodium and potassium and was toxic to the plants. There was no evidence of any beneficial effect of the humic substances in coal on plant growth beyond that attributable to the nutrients they contained. Keywords
