Impact of CD-ROM Database Searching on Interlibrary Loans:

Abstract
A study was conducted to determine whether there was an increase in interlibrary loan requests since the introduction of CD-ROM searching at the KFUPM Library in Saudi Arabia, and, if so, the magnitude and implications of such an increase. Data collected from interlibrary loan requests receievd between August 1991 and September 1992 were analysed. Results indicate that there was an increase of approximately 14 percent. Over 21% of all interlibrary loan (ILL) requests were prompted by CD-ROM searching. To address some of the problems encountered due to the growing number of ILL requests, it is recommended that, among others, the Library acquire the journals indexed in most frequently used CD-ROM databases in whatever format-hardcopy, microform or CD-ROM full-text databases.
