Similarity of Attitudes and Attraction to an Occupation

Abstract
41 college students completed a 13-item Survey of Attitudes. During a later session, each received a Survey of Occupation Members' Attitudes which was represented as being the attitudes of most people engaged in a hypothetical occupation. These attitudes were either 15% or 85% similar to S's own views. S then made judgments of the occupation's social prestige, opportunities for advancement, opportunities for getting to know interesting people, opportunities for self-fulfillment, how much he would like the occupation, and how much he would enjoy entering the occupation. The results indicated that similarity of attitudes between the person and the occupation was associated with significantly more attraction to the occupation (liking and desire to enter) as well as more favorable evaluations of the occupation's social prestige, opportunities for getting to know interesting people, and opportunities for self-fulfillment.
