A waveform or signal experiences no phase distortion in passing through a filter having a pure linear-phase characteristic. This advantage, not available in analogue designs based upon lumped circuit elements, is realisable in certain types of digital filter. After summarising the frequency and time domain properties of linear-phase digital filters, the possibilities for recursive design are examined, and some practical classes of filter are described.
