A study of a representative sample of flat-spectrum radio sources

Abstract
We present near-infrared measurements made with the Anglo-Australian telescope of a representative sample of 47 compact objects drawn from a complete sample of 64 strong flat-spectrum radio sources. Optical spectra have been obtained for all the objects in the complete sample, allowing us to investigate the dependence of colour on the various identification classes (QSO, BL Lac object, active galaxy, empty field) and on redshift for the QSOs and active galaxies. Infrared counterparts were also found for six of the empty fields, and we discuss the nature of these objects. The data indicate that the majority of them are QSOs, although a few may be BL Lac objects.
